Dr. Frank Sloan has been a J. Alexander McMahon Professor of Health Policy and Management and Professor of Economics at Duke University since 1993. Before then, he held positions at the Rand Corporation, University of Florida, and Vanderbilt University. He received his B.A. from Oberlin College and a Ph.D. in Economics from Harvard University. He is a native of Greensboro, North Carolina. He is the author of about 400 publications. His field of specialization is health economics. Within this field, he has studied health behaviors (e.g., smoking, alcohol consumption, patient adherence to recommended care), health care markets (competition, regulation), and major public programs (e.g., Medicare and Medicaid). He was elected to membership in the National Academy of Medicine (NAM) in 1982 and has chaired or co-chaired five NAM committees. He has been a member of the NAM Council. During 1996-97, he was a Commissioner of the Physician Payment Review Committee which advised Congress on Medicare payment policy. He served as President of the American Society of Health Economists from 2012-14. He is a member of the Advisory Council of the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism. He is the founding editor of the American Journal of Health Economics, 2014 to present. In 2013, he received a Dean’s Award for Excellence in Mentoring from the Graduate School at Duke. In 2016, he was awarded the Victor R. Fuchs Award for Lifetime Contributions to the Field of Health Economics.
