ESL Adult Bible Reading Class (Sunday, 11:00 a.m. -12:00 noon)
Free. Small and interactive. Taught by American native-speakers. Fun after-class activities.
This class uses the Bible, the most read and influential book in human history, as its reading material. Class reads through important stories from the Bible to help participants understand the major concepts and vocabulary of the Bible. Good for people who are new to the Bible.
ESL Children’s Worship Lab (Sunday, 11:00 a.m. -12:00 noon)
This class uses the Illustrated Children’s Bible to help children read English. Children will also learn how to sing hymns, pray, and build meaningful relationships with God and with other people. Good for children of 1st-6th grades.

Meet Our ESL Teachers
Diane Asbill
Diane is a native North Carolinian having lived in the Triangle area all of her life. She became a member of Hillside Church (at that time Carrboro Baptist Church) shortly after she married her husband, James, 41 years ago. They raised three sons in this church family and are blessed to see them each ministering in their own churches with their wives and 5 grandchildren.
She is an RN with a BSN and International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners certification and have worked at UNC Hospitals for most of her career in pediatrics and lactation. She is the Director of Lactation Services at N.C. Women’s Hospital and clinical preceptor for the Carolina Global Breastfeeding Institute of the Gillings School of Public Health at UNC-CH.
Her family lives on a 30-acre farm outside of Carrboro and her hobbies and interests include gardening, reading, quilting, genealogy, cooking, and being with her family. She is an ordained Elder and Deacon of Hillside Church. She also serves in the children’s ministry as an extended care provider. Diane and James, her husband, are long-term members of the Empty Nesters discipleship group. She loves her role as a greeter at Hillside and her newest ministry with the ESL Bible Study class.
Kathleen Johnson
Kathy is from Michigan. She has two precious grown sons. One is 48 and one is 40. They reside in Upstate New York and Pinehurst , NC respectively. Kathy’s BA is from Kalamazoo College, MA University of Michigan, PhD. University of North Carolina.
She had 32 plus years of teaching experience. First at State UNiversity of New York at Geneseo for 10 years. Then at Francis Marion University in South Carolina for 1 year, then at UNC at Chapel Hill for 20 years. While in New York she also taught ESL at the Geneseo Migrant Center for several years where she produced her own ESL teaching materials.
Currently she is working toward her Certificate in Botanical Illustration at the UNC Botanical Garden. Always learning something new.
Sheva Myers
Sheva is an administrative assistant in the Gastroenterology Medicine Clinic at the University of North Carolina Hospital in Chapel Hill. She has degrees in Occupational Therapy and a Bachelor of Science from the San Jose State University in California. In addition, she has a graduate certificate for Scientific Illustrator from the University of California at Santa Cruz. Her ministry passion is work for Jews for Jesus.
Bob Shrewsbury
Bob is a professor at UNC-CH, School of Pharmacy. He received his BS in pharmacy from the University of Oklahoma in 1972 and his PhD from the University of Kentucky in 1977. His background training is in basic and applied biopharmaceutics and pharmacokinetics and in drug-interaction mechanisms.
